By Kimm, Parma, Ohio USA
PROM at 23 weeksDelivery at 24 weeks + 5 days.
Story added: 2003-12-02
My husband and I found out we were pregnant after trying for 4 years and two intra-uterine insemination attempts. We were so excited. The pregnancy was completely normal (except for the cerclage at 12 weeks). Around 17 weeks, I even started to feel better - no more nausea or exhaustion. I felt weird that I wasn't experiencing these symptoms anymore.
My husband and I met for lunch on Oct 17. Whoosh! My water completely broke. I knew things were bad right away. I was so glad he was with me though. We rushed to the nearest hospital where they made sure I was stable and then sent me to a better equipped facility.
My water broke at 23 weeks, but I lasted in the hospital for another 12 days. I had kept a positive mental attitude while in the hospital - the doctors, nurses and staff enjoyed taking care of me (they even told me so). But on Oct. 29th (24 wks and 5 days) I got sick. Really sick. I ended up with an emergency classic c-section under general anesthesia. When I woke I was told I had a beautiful baby girl.
Audrey Michelle was born weighing 1lb 8oz. She did well during the anticipated "honeymoon" period preemies experience. A NICU doc came to us the next morning with the horriffic news - Audrey's lungs were failing. I got to hold her and kiss her before letting her go. She died in my arms at 17 hours of age.
We are so thankful that Audrey made us parents. We will always love her as our daughter. Our sadness lies in all the crushed hopes and dreams. We find comfort in others. Please e-mail me if you need to talk, vent, grieve, etc.
God bless you all,
Kimm
