By Deb, New ZealandMy pregnancy with my second baby went pretty normal with normal scans etc. until 19 weeks when I had minor spotting of blood. This was checked out and was determined to be ok. At 22 weeks I developed a minor urinary tract infection and took antibiotics to treat it straight away and this seemed to be working fine. Three days later I noticed some clear fluid leaking slowly over 6 hours or so. I thought it was the UTI but rang my midwife anyway and she advised me to go the hopsital to get it checked "just in case". By the time I have arrived most of my waters had gone in one big gush. I was petrified at the prospect of losing my son. I had a postive test for ambiotic fluid but had no bleeding or contractions. Scans showed only 2.5 cm of ambiotic fluid remaining. For the next 8 weeks I remained pretty much in hosptial (with some time out in weekends) on complete bed rest. My treatment was to take temp and pulse every four hours to monitor for infection, steriods weekly and to scan the baby for fluid changes and growth rates. I lost regular amounts of fluid (cup fulls daily) and eventually bled everyday also (after 25 weeks). My son kept growing well during this time despite little if no liquor shown on scans. At 30 weeks the bleeding got very bad and I delivered naturally at hospital. Despite all the concerns my son during my pregnancy he needed very little help with CPAP weighing 3.7 pound and grew well in SCBU / NICU. He is now 7 months old and is fine. I never ever thought he would survive but he did. So dont give up hope and believe in miracles.
