Elizabeth's Post PROM Story

By Elizabeth, NYC USA
PROM at 29 weeks + 5 days. Delivery at 34 weeks + 1 days.
Story added: 2008-09-03
This was my 3rd pregnancy. I prommed my other 2 pregnancies, each time a little earlier (35 wks, 34 wks), and my husband and I were cautious about trying again. Nevertheless, we decided to try again. We got pregnant quickly and I basically took it easy the entire time. I had progesterone shots starting at 16 weeks, bi-weekly cervical checks, and was on modified activity.
Despite those measures, I prommed at 29 weeks. I think it may have even been 3-4 weeks earlier when I felt a big gush after using the bathroom, followed by little leaks, but the leaking stopped, so I convinced myself that I was just paranoid. There was no mistaking it at 29 weeks though. My AFI remained fairly high throughout.

Same deal as the last times, hospital bedrest, steroids, and try and hold off until 34 weeks.
Being in the hospital was a miserable experience. No sleep, heparin shots twice a day to prevent blood clots, blood draws every other day to check for infection. I was a pin cushion and covered in bruises. I just kept reminding myself that it was for the baby, and it would all be a distant memory soon.

After 3 weeks, I stopped leaking! My AFI returned to 15, with no signs of infection, so they sent me home (on bedrest). I got to reconnect with my family, and began to wonder what a full term baby would be like.

It was not to be. At 34 weeks 1 day, I had a complete rupture.
Madelyn had apgars of 9 and 9 and came out screaming! She weighed 4 lbs 13 oz and was 17 1/2" long. She stayed in the NICU for 10 days to grow and with the exception of a few apnea episodes, did great.
She had a lot of people praying for her, and she made it to 34 weeks. I guess that was just her time to be born.
As I write this, she is 8 weeks old, and weighs a whopping 8 lbs! She has brought our family such joy.
