Abby's PROM Story

By Abby Johnson, Zeeland, MI USA
PROM at 34 weeks + 2 days. Delivery at 34 weeks + 6 days.
Story added: 2007-01-23
This was my 1st pregnancy. We had difficulty getting pregnant & we did 4 cycles of Clomid before conception. Up until week 34 it had been a great, normal pregnancy.

I woke up the morning of week 34 & 2 days, got out of bed, & noticed my water broke. I went to the hospital that we planned on delivering at, they confirmed that it was PPROM & sent me in an ambulance to a hospital with a NICU.

The doctors had decided not to promote my labor at the time, but not to stop it either. I held out for 4 days, laboring on & off. Not allowed to walk around, labor was very painful laying in bed. The doctors kept saying every day you can hold out, the better & now I know they were right.

I delivered my son, 5lbs. 4oz. after a difficult labor. And one which they would not let me get an epidural because of the risk of infection. He spend 5 days in the NICU with normal preemie problems, sucking, jaundice, keeping tempature.

We brought him home on the happiest day of our lives! He is almost 1 1/2 years old now, so happy & cute! We have struggled with doctors worried about his weight all along & we took many more precausions with him than we probably would have with a full term child. It paid off, he has only been sick once with the "flu" from my niece.

We are now wondering if we should try to have another child, or remain estatic with the one we have. I am worried about conceving, let alone delivering early again. Any advice would be wonderful!
