By Laura Glynn, Sunnyvale, California USAI was visiting relatives for the holidays. I woke up on 12/29/99 with an upset stomach. I took tums, drank juice and felt better. At about 6am I went to the bathroom and my water broke. At the time I thought that it was just urine as I was able to stop the flow. I have a 6 year old and when my water broke with her it all flowed out in a rush. I had to use the bathroom several more time over the next few hours but still did not think that it was my water. I was in Kentucky and waiting to call my Dr (In California) until a decent hour.

At about 9am I noticed a green discharge. I immediately called my Dr and was told to go to the ER. On the way to the hospital I started have contractions about 3-4 minutes apart. We were so happy when the nurse found our baby's heartbeat. The doctor came in and said that he was going to give me a shot that should stop labor. He then did an internal exam and discovered that I had a prolapsed cord. He ordered an emergency c-section and 5 minutes later I was in an operating room of a strange hospital with a doctor that I did not know getting put under.
I woke after surgery asking about my baby. He was 1lb 13 oz and 13 1/2 inches. The pediatrician worked on him for 40 minutes but he was just too young. We had to name our baby after he was dead because we had not chosen a name yet. His name is Nicholaus. We had to make funeral arrangements that night (the hospital had to know where to take him)
We were able to hold him before they took him away. He was perfect other than being too young. I developed Pneumonia while I was in the hospital and did not get to have the funeral until 1/17/99. Neither the doctors in Kentucky or my own doctor here can tell me why this happened. They think that I may have had an infection but don't know how or why that would cause the PROM.
I am able to get pregnant again but will be so nervous that this will happen again. This still feels like a nightmare that I want to wake up from. I had not had any complications with my pregnancy so this was a complete shock. Thanks for letting me vent.
