After we lost our daughter Hope, I wasn't really sure that I wanted to risk going through that kind of loss again- or that I could even get pregnant again. Thankfully, God took care of making those decisions for me and on Christmas morning 2001, I found out that I was indeed expecting again. I notified my OB right away and they tested my progesterone (which was low with Hope) the day after Christmas. My progesterone was not real low, but they decided to put me on it anyway. I didn't have any spotting this time, so that was encouraging to me. At 9 1/2 weeks, I noted a greenish mucous after using the bathroom. I called the dr. and they had me come in right away to be tested for BV. Sure enough, I had it. Of course, the usual treatment for BV is Flagyl, which cannot be prescribed in the 1st trimester. They went ahead and gave me the prescription to have filled as soon as I was 12 weeks. In the meantime, they suggested that I take saltwater baths (to help balance the vaginal pH) and take an acidophilus supplement. We now believe that I contracted BV during my pregnancy with Hope and because it was left to flourish (not treated with antibiotics) it caused my membranes to rupture.
During this pregnancy, I had BV 4 times. My dr. was very diligent and had me checked at every visit until I reached 34 weeks.
This pregnancy, I ended up having preterm labor and was on bedrest and procardia for the 6 weeks prior to our daughter's birth. However, when I finally went into labor, our daughter was ready and weighed in at 6lbs 12oz. Although she was only 36 weeks, she came out with her eyes open and crying loudly.
We feel she is quite a miracle-from the BV and preterm labor, to the true knot in her very short umbilical cord, we know that she would not be here if God had not show us great mercy.
My hope in sharing this story is that it will encourage another who has suffered the loss of a baby through PROM. Thankfully, you can go on to have a healthy baby after losing one.
We named this daughter Joy-God gave us hope through our daughter Hope and He restored our joy through our daughter Joy.
