By Amy, Pine City, NY USAOn Wednesday May 19, 1999 I was 14 weeks along when I lost all of my amniotic fluid. My husband and I rushed to the ER. Our baby's heart was still beating strong on the ultrasound so I was sent home on bedrest until I could see my doctor on Friday. We prayed all night that I would not lose my baby. I passed a few clots that night and one the next day. On Friday I went to my OB/GYN and to our amazement our baby's heart was still going strong on the ultrasound, and for the first time in our pregnancy we heard our baby's heartbeat. I was admitted to the hospital and watched for infection until Monday when I was sent home on bedrest. At almost 17 weeks I went to the bathroom and it felt like something was hanging out. I told my husband about it and he checked me and saw that it was the umbilical cord. We rushed to the hospital and I had to be on all fours for the 45 minute ride. I was told on the phone that I would probably lose my baby soon. When we got to the hospital I had an examination and at first my doctor could not see the cord,I thought for a minute we had been wrong about seeing it, but he finally did find it. I had an ultrasound and our baby was still alive with a strong heartbeat. My doctor could not believe it and said he had never seen anything like it in 30 years of practice. I was admitted and given and IV to watch for infection. Four days later we could not hear a heartbeat. We had another ultrasound and heard the worst news of our lives. Our baby had died. The umbilical had crimped and cut off his air supply. I was given a pill to bring on labor and two hours later I delivered our son, Matthew David. We have never felt such grief in our lives. We have infertility problems and tried for three years to conceive him. We have been trying ever since with no success. I would love to talk to other women who have gone through this. My husband and I are both Christians and could not have gotten through without Jesus, but it is still very hard at times. This week we are having our first insemination done and I am so worried that if I get pregnant for multiples I will lose them to PROM again. Does anyone know the chances of having PROM again and if it is a higher risk when carrying twins or more? Thanks.
