My pPROM Story; The Story of Axel I “pPROM’ed” (Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes) ...my water broke at 21w 5d. I was immediately told to abort and that my boy would never make it. It was devastating. But I felt like it wasn’t over, there had to be something I could do, I wasn’t going to just let go. After a while of grieving, the doctor finally mentioned something called “expectant management” and that the chances were slim but I had the option of going on bed rest and as long as I didn’t get an infection then I could remain on bed rest until the baby was born. Of course I opted for that! However they couldn’t admit me to the hospital until 24w so I had to go home the next day. The short version was I was on bed rest for 50 days until my son (Axel) was born via c-section at 28w 6d. (Kaiser Roseville) The doctors and nurses never expected him to live for more than a few minutes. They expected his lungs to not work since my measurable fluid was between 0 to 3cm. But my boy came out crying and kicking like no one could believe. He was born Dec 3 and weighed 2lbs 10oz and 14 ½” long. He was perfect... tiny, but perfect. He was put on the bubble c-pap and thank God never had to be vented. He stayed in the NICU for 98 days, and came home about a month after his due date. He really liked the 02 and wasn’t ready to let it go! So he came home on oxygen and since then has steadily grown. He finally came of the 02 in early July 2011 and thank God has only had two colds. As of today he is 15 months, 12 corrected and is happy and healthy. He is truly one of GOD’s miracles! To all of you who are experiencing this devastating moment in your life, there is hope! Pray daily, drink lots of water and juice and eat a lot of yogurt. If anyone would like to hear more of my story or ask any questions please email me. I hope my story brings hope and encouragement to you. ~Jessyka~
