My wife, carrying twins, prom'd at 20
weeks.
Consultant told us there was nothing
that could be done, and to expect
labour within 48 hrs. I searched
everywhere for some form of treatment
that might be possible, but couldn't
find anything. Have since heard of
amnioinfusion - I don't know if that
might have been a possibility but we
weren't offered it.
Anyway, after 2-3 days in hospital and
another scan it appeared that there
was still a little fluid remaining in
the sac. So we went home, and
following information on websites like
this, wife basically sat on her back-
side for 8 weeks (with the occasional
trip out in a borrowed wheelchair) to
try to lose as little fluid as
possible. Some medical opinion
suggested hospitalisation at 24 weeks,
to make sure that we were right where
we had to be as soon as they were
born, but our consultant said that
infection was the greatest threat to
keeping them in the womb, and the last
place my wife should be was in
hospital, and we agreed with him.
Eventually an infection did trigger
labour at 28 weeks, leading to an
emergency cesarian.
Daughter (whose sac had ruptured)
needed ventilation and oxygen therapy
for 4 months; son needed a ventilator
for just 3 days. They are now 21
months and doing great. We're so lucky
(or blessed!).
Sometimes we need a little hope to
help us through - I know I did, and I
got more hope from this website (and a
few others) than I did from our
consultant, who was really just giving
us the medical facts.
