We found out very early on that we were
having twins. At my first exam at 6
weeks I had high blood pressure & was
"larger" than i should have been for 6
weeks, so I went for an early US. At 15
weeks I woke early one morning and had a
large gush of fluid. I called my Dr.
right away and was told to go to the
hospital right away. My inital exam by
the resident who was there showed I was
leaking amniotic fluid. "Im sorry" she
said "but you will go into labor in the
next few days and it is to early to save
either of them" I felt as if my heart
had been torn out. My DR. came a few
hours later and did an US. Baby A had
half the fluid that B did and the next
morning had even less. I was put on
antibiotics and sent home told to come
back in 1 week for another US. The next
week baby A had little, if no fluid. We
were given grim odds and sent to a
genetic specilist so we could "know all
of our options". They did not advise us
to terminate one or both of them (I
would not have anyway) But we were told
the best chance of having "at least one
baby was to continue the pregnancy and
hopefully we could make it to viability
for baby B to survive" But that the
chances of baby A resealing and
developing normally was less than 10 % (
I would put it in my MIRICLE drawer she
said) I went home and stayed on bed rest
except for my weekly ultrasound & Dr.
visit. I leaked fluid daily in large
gushes (sometimes pink, but mostly
clear)I drank a CRAZY amount of water,
no matter how much I drank I was dying
of thirst, we are talking GALLONS a day.
Every week we went for our US and the
same results, Baby A had little to no
fluid . Sometimes a pocket of 1 or 2 but
that was it . We were told no matter how
long the pregnancy continued that with
out fluid Baby A would not develop
enough lung tissue to survive. At 30
weeks I was addmitted to the hospital
for bed rest until I delivered. At 32
weeks 6 days I developed Pre E and was
taken for a emergency c-cection. Baby A,
Lily Grace came out first with a loud
cry. Then B, Zoey Faith crying as well!!
Baby B ( Zoey ) Never needed any support
and was home in 6 days. Lily was on a
vent for 6 days and on oxegyn for 2
weeks. She remained in the NICU because
she was not feeding well. She was very
tired all the time and did not wake to
feed, she would fall asleep during
feeding. At first they put this of to
her "small lungs " and that she had to
work harder to breath so she tired
easily. At 6 weeks old I knew something
else was wrong and after pushing for
further testing we found she had a large
hole in her heart (VSD). After a nasty
bout of phnumonia she underwent open
heart surgery at 3 months old and only
4.5 lbs. She is a true miricle and
blessing. She is still regaining her
strength and has MILD BPD but she will
out grow it and live a "normal life"
This last year has been the hardest of
my life but I have these 2 beautiful
babies. I would go thru it all again. If
you need to talk or vent , I have a
great ear, I know what it is like.
