I want to share my story to give hope
for those who are dealing with PROM.
I thought I was pregnant with twins, but
after four ultrasounds a third sac
appeared. I was 12 weeks pregnant with
triplets. My doctor noticed that Baby C
had an unusual heart beat so he sent me
to a fetal specialist. We were told that
Baby C had several birth defects and
that it would not make it. The
specialist thought that there was a
possibility that Baby B could be an
identical twin of Baby C. He had me get
an amniocentisis, at thirteen weeks, to
find out if Baby B had birth defects,
too. It turned out that it was not an
identical nor did it have any birth
defects. Unfortunately, the next morning
I woke up and realized that I was
leaking fluid. I knew immediately that
one of the baby's sacs had ruptured. My
OB confirmed that it was Baby B, my
healthy baby's sac. He said that it
looked as if I had miscarried it. He
could not see the sac anymore. I was
devasted! It seemed as if I had lost two
babies. One week later an ultrasound
showed that Baby B's sac had a small
amount of fluid and that the baby looked
okay. My OB and specialist were still
not very optimistic that it would
survive. We did an ultrasound every week
to determine how much fluid the baby
had. Luckily, the fluid that it had was
just enough to keep it alive. Baby C's
heart quit beating and we lost her when
I was eighteen weeks. One morning when I
was in the shower, I looked down and saw
blood every where. I went to the
hospital immediately to do an
ultrasound. The babies were okay. It
looked as if my placenta had a slight
tear. I spent one night in the hospital
and then went home to spend the
remainder of my pregnancy in bed. I
hired someone to take care of my two
year old and I while my husband went to
work. I went to the hospital three more
times with severe leaking and bleeding.
Finally, my OB sent me to Presbyterian
Hospital, in Dallas, to stay until I had
to deliver. I was 27 weeks. I was
terrified! I leaked fluid and bled
constantly. I was given steroids twice.
I began having contractions off and on
during week 30. I was given a shot to
help stop the contractions on three
different occasions. I was loosing a lot
of blood, so they decided to do an
emergency C-section when I was 31 weeks.
Later, I found out that leaking amnio
fluid for such a long period of time had
caused the tearing of my placenta. It
was too dangerous for my health as well
as the babies to continue the pregnancy.
My precious Sarah (Baby A) weighed 3lb.
15oz. and my darling Katherine (Baby
C)weighed 2lb. 10oz. They were perfect!
They were kept in the NICU for one week.
They were moved to our local hospital to
learn how to eat. Now, they are almost
six months and are doing great! Sarah is
huge! She weighs approximately 14 lbs.
and Kate weighs 11. We are so blessed! I
hope that our story will help others
remember to have faith.
