At 21 weeks my water broke,and I
thought I had lost my baby. There was
a lot of blood and I thought that I
was miscarrying. I arrived at the
hospital and the nurse found the
heartbeat. What was happening to me?
It was then that the doctor came in
and after a quick ultrasound explained
to me that I had prommed.
We were shocked and so frightened.
Neither of us had thought for a moment
that something like this could happen.
The doctors put me on strict bedrest
and every day would come in and tell
me that things did not look good. My
membranes continued to leak and I
could never seem to keep any level of
fluid in utero. We were braced for the
worst.
The days turned to weeks. The weeks
turned to months and at 30 weeks 4
days, after ten weeks in hopital, we
delivered a little girl. Three lbs,
four oz. 14 1/2 inches long.
She crashed shortly after birth
despite her high apgar scores of 9 and
9. She was rushed to the Hospital For
Sick Children and only given a fifty
percent chance of survival. She beat
the odds, and after what seemed like
an eternity and countless
complications, I am the proud mother
of Emma MacKenzie, my lovely and very
healthy 18 month old daughter.
She has chronic lung disease that has
not manifested in any way and that she
will have grown out of by the age of
three. Her progress is remarkable.
From that wee child I had been asked
to say goodbye to, to the defiant
toddler in my life who is right on
track, we are thankful every day for
such a blessing.
I hope that my story will give others
hope.
